Baba Louie's

A few weeks ago I found myself in Hudson, NY (two hours North of NYC) trying out Babe Louie's Pizzeria, a quaint and cozy little place right on the main drag of the town.

I'm 92% sure the couple in the window are posing for this picture (awkward). Baba Louie's pizzas are self-proclaimed wood-fired, but the oven is a bit of a mystery to me...

At first it looks like your run-of-the-mill deck gas oven hidden behind some fancy tile (I've seen that 'trick' before), but a closer look and you'll notice the pile of wood in the blue container under the oven. What is that digital read out? A thermometer? As much as I'd like to solve this riddle for you, a thick piece of glass prevented me from speaking with the pizza man (who didn't look like he was in the mood to talk anyway). I guess we'll never know.

I ordered a Margherita (what else is new?)-

Interesting, huh? Along with sauce, mozz, basil and Parmesan, the menu says they use 'garlic-infused olive oil.' In short, the pizza was tasty, but not necessarily worth a special trip up for it.

The crust was nice and crunchy around the cornicione, then becoming a bit more soft, pliable and chewy towards the center. I don't know what they're doing with that oven of theirs, but I think they could be getting more out of it- the above pizza upskirt proves it.

Hardly any char going on. That's okay though, the sauce had a tasty kick to it, almost spicy. It kind of reminded me of Two Boots' sauce, something I'm a fan of. Mom got "Cole's Creation" which consists of mozz, feta, red onions, plum tomatoes, balsamic vinaigrette, and an eff-load of arugula-

Yikes, sorry the pictures are so dark! Available lighting isn't something most pizzerias have much of. Dad got the Abbondante BBQ Chicken pie, which sports mozz, Parmesan, smoked gouda, oregano, red onions, BBQ chicken and a hypnotizing swirl of BBQ sauce:

A pretty gorgeous pie, I have to say. Oh yeah, and it was my birthday that day; check out the best birthday cake EVER!

Right?! White cake, red frosting, fruit roll-up pepperonis, green fondant basil, and grated white chocolate, all served in a pizza take-out box.

My sister is the coolest.
